Advanced ceramics, Sacmi Team on a mission to the States

Daytona Beach: hydraulic pressing and tape casting compared at the 32nd ACerS meeting

The international protagonists of the advanced ceramic business recently got together at Daytona Beach in the USA for the 32nd ACerS meeting. The conference, held from 27th January to 1st February 2008, brought participants up to date on the latest research into advanced ceramics, the focus being on the advantages and disadvantages of the different industrial applications.

Eleven scheduled conferences, two seminars, a plenary session and a small exhibition area, plus, of course, the presence of Sacmi Team - the special Sacmi Group division dedicated to advanced ceramics, technical ceramic included, that brings together and integrates all the know-how, skills, innovation and technology of Sacmi Imola (body preparation, plant engineering, financing), Sama (forming technologies such as extrusion, pressure casting, tape casting and automation), Riedhammer (drying and firing technologies) and Laeis (materials and process development, hydraulic pressing).

Representing Sacmi Team at the meeting was Alfred Kaiser of Laeis, who presented – during the “Developments in forming and sintering technology” session of 31st January – a report on hydraulic pressing and tape casting as applied to the world of advanced ceramic. The report, drawn up with the aid of Josef Kraus of Sama and Roel Van Loo of Alpha Ceramics, provided an overview of the Team’s research work, especially as regards the utility of both techniques – currently at the experimental stage – for the production of reduced-thickness advanced ceramics; each of them, pointed out Kaiser, has its own limits and advantages. Then, facts and figures at hand, Kaiser illustrated the key role of the firing stage when it comes to obtaining in-line products with market-compliant quality standards.

Organised by the American Ceramic Society, the 32nd ACerS meeting was, this year, held at Daytona because the traditional venue of Cocoa Beach is no longer big enough to contain it. For anyone in the advanced ceramic industry the ACerS meeting is a not-to-be-missed event as it offers a golden opportunity to exchange up-to-the-minute information on research and form new relations with industry protagonists in readiness for new business opportunities.
