Birjand, the new heart of Iranian ceramics

Sacmi supports local businesses in the construction of an international production district

Birjand, about 200,000 inhabitants less than 100 km from the eastern border with Afghanistan, is rapidly gaining ground as Iran’s fastest-expanding ceramic tile production district. In light of its strategic positioning with respect to several Middle Eastern countries and constantly growing demand both in Iran itself and neighbouring countries, Birjand has, over the last two years, become the focus of heavy investment on the part of the ceramic industry.

Throughout this growth process, Sacmi has successfully played a key role alongside local businesses, offering efficient high-output solutions and so gaining their full trust. Sacmi-supplied machines, the very best in terms of quality and technology, allow customers to be highly competitive and come out winners in the “price war” currently in progress in the region. Sacmi will soon be supplying Birjand with five complete lines for traditional size single-fire floor tiles and monoporosa wall tiles. During 2008 these lines will become operational in several companies within the area, thus providing a welcome output boost of over 40,000 square metres a day.

The stimulus from local firms has been vital to this latest expansion phase: even as things stand now, the Birjand district is one of Iran’s leading tile manufacturing areas and further expansion is expected to strengthen and improve that position. Sacmi will, in this sense, be providing support to its numerous customers throughout every stage of assembly and start-up, thus ensuring that high productivity goes hand in hand with the top quality the reference markets expect – right from the word go. Sacmi’s challenge – and that of its customers – is to transform, in the sort-medium term, the Birjand district into a major, international ceramic production area.
