Ceramica Domino implements “CONTINUA” evolution

Continua line has been fully operative at this Portuguese company for some months now

A new production line has been successfully installed and started up at Ceramica Domino (Portugal): the jewel in the crown of this new plant is the tried and tested Continua technology, able to produce porcelain slabs and tiles of any size or thickness, personalised both on the surface and in-body. This line, which has been running at full capacity since last summer, allowed Domino to present new products, developed jointly with the Sacmi R&D lab, at the recent Cersaie exhibition. The leading product is the 1200x1200 tile, available in a range of thicknesses and structures.

The configuration of the Continua line is enhanced by the inclusion of Sacmi-patented devices that allow unique products of outstanding technical and aesthetic value to be made. Worthy of special mention are the dry digital decoration (DDD) machines which distribute spray dried powders, glazes and flakes, offering pattern precision and repeatability unrivalled by any other devices currently on the market. The line also includes a TPV cutting machine: this is used to make, on unfired material prior to pressing, not just the main 1200x1200 format but also sub-multiples of it. This particular configuration has been supplied with SFS upper forming dies, made by Sacmi M&D, featuring cutting-edge solutions for fast format changeovers. To this same end, the high tonnage PH7500 has been equipped with the CRS rapid die changeover system, allowing formats to be changed in less than 30 minutes. Every single detail on the line has been designed with extreme care and attention, both upstream and downstream from the press, to ensure maximum output flexibility, a factor of strategic importance on markets steadily evolving towards ever-smaller, high added value production lots produced in different sizes. Completing the line is the 5-layer ECP 307/19.7 horizontal dryer built by Sacmi Forni.

The line was successfully installed in an existing part of the factory and constitutes an excellent example of the kind of technological upgrade companies can implement without having to make any substantial alterations to the existing configuration: an aspect now more important than ever as investment in innovation is the key to meeting the market challenges of the future.
