Complex polymers: from structure to modelling

Eupoc 2007, European symposium co-sponsored by Sacmi at Gargnano (Brescia)

Gargnano, province of Brescia, northern end of Lake Garda: this, then, is the setting for Eupoc 2007, the European scientific/university conference on the molecular architecture of complex polymers, modelling and the rheology of plastic materials. Partly sponsored by Sacmi – which sees the conference as a key opportunity to reinforce ties and partnerships with the world of advanced research – the event has been organised by the European Polymer Federation and coordinated by the professor of Industrial Chemistry and Polymer materials, Michele Laus.

The programme of the symposium - to be held from 27th May to 1st June - is a rich one, its aim being to generate an exchange of scientific information on the topics of polymers with a complex molecular architecture, multi-phase polymer materials, composite materials and nano-composites, reactive polymers and, finally, polymer process simulations. All topics of great interest, especially to Sacmi’s Plastic and Closures Divisions, which, as Prof. Laus himself states, “produce, among other things, machines for the transformation of plastic materials that employ cutting and compression technologies highly different from injection and extrusion”. A technology, continues the professor, “that is extremely competitive”, with considerable potential still to be tapped in the “processing of materials of high molecular weight”.

The European Polymer Federation has been organising conferences of this calibre since 1998. Such events constitute outstanding opportunities for science and industry to exchange information and seek mutual confirmation. Hence Sacmi’s desire to support the event, the 2007 edition of which has attracted some 100 participants. Speakers, all top experts in their respective fields, were invited from both the scientific and industrial communities. The organisers have also set aside ample space for debate, which will mainly focus on the applicability of theoretical scientific models to actual production processes.
Research into complex polymers has come a long way in the last five years.
