Drinktec 2009: the industry begins to feel the swell of recovery

Keen interest in new Sacmi products such as the Opera RFST labeller

A big success for the 2009 edition of Drinktec, the international showcase for beverage and liquid food technologies held in Munich from 14th to 19th September. During the fair, attended by all the industry’s major international players, Sacmi included, the foundations were laid for highly important industrial agreements in the beverage and liquid food industry.

A clear, positive signal, then, in what is still a tough time for the world economy and a period in which the flow of industrial investment has slowed to a drip. “Sacmi sees the Drinktec fair as very important”, stated Sacmi’s General Manager Pietro Cassani, who was also keen to point out that “a variety of innovative solutions were presented”. New products, the general manager reveals, have been given a warm welcome by the mainly international clientele and this, he concluded, indicates “the start of the industry bounce-back”.

The fact that willingness to invest is on the rise again is demonstrated by the proportion of foreign visitors, which rose to 55% - bringing the total number of visitors to 60,000 and involving 170 countries – while exhibitors are unanimous in thinking that they can now look to the future with greater optimism (a survey showed that 64% of exhibitors expect to see a recovery). Of course, there will still be huge changes compared to the past. To be competitive companies know they will have to focus on quality rather than quantity, on the capacity to blend productivity with efficiency, to reduce costs while cutting environmental impact.

Sacmi had plenty of new products on show but some of the biggest attention-grabbers were the modular labelling machines: the Opera RFST (Roll Fed Sleeve Technology) with laser technology and the Opera 400 Modular pressure sensitive + Cold glue + Roll Fed.

Modular labelling machines are ideal when it comes to providing the flexibility and the mix of applications that are in enormous demand within the bottling industry. On modular machines every labelling station is fitted on a removable carriage that can easily be connected to and disconnected from the main machine structure and replaced with a module offering different technology and performance.

The Opera 400 33T is a modular machine with three different labelling stations: pressure sensitive, cold glue and roll fed. It is equipped with a CVS 3000, a camera-controlled orientation system that can achieve output rates of 60,000 bph.

Modular Opera RFST Roll Fed Sleeve Technology allows the application of plastic film shrink-wrap labels starting directly from the roll of film using laser sealing technology, while shrink-wrapping is subsequently completed at further shrinking stations. The main advantage of this method is total integration of production and label application on the bottling line, thus making the entire process fast and economical. The modular Opera RFST can apply both shrink-wrap labels and other labels with different application technologies, such as pressure sensitive labels, cold glue labels and roll-fed. This is a huge innovation. Until now, the market was unable to offer anything of the kind.

Modular Opera RFST is available in several configurations and can achieve output rates of 48,000 bph.
Customers also expressed keen interest in the new CCM80 [continuous compression moulding machine], which in just 60 seconds can produce more than 2,000 caps (with just 80 moulds) with a cycle lasting just 2.4 seconds. The CCM80 can use a wide range of market-available raw materials such PP, HDPE and LDPE without losing any of the advantages of the SACMI CCM range: finished product quality, reliability, low maintenance costs, high output, low consumption, extremely short heat exchange times, excellent compactness and production process repeatability.
