Major manufacturer of refractory items for the glass industry chooses Sacmi

Sigma Group purchases the new Sacmi PHR 1600 to meet growing market demand in the special-format refractory product sector

Founded in 1990 thanks to the passion and know-how of a group of people with over 30 years’ refractory-making experience,Sigma Srl (since 2014 the Sigma Group) is now a major manufacturer of refractory items for the glass industry. Over 80% of its output is exported. To meet growing customer and market demand the company recently contacted Sacmi to order a new PHR 1600 press.

The new PHR 1600 press, currently being installed, belongs to Sacmi’s innovative range of refractory-forming presses. These stand out on account of their reliability and excellent manufacturing versatility. Moreover, thanks to special design features and fast, optimised press set-up, even the most complex products can be managed efficiently. With a pressing force of 1600 tons, this machine is characterised by ultra-high efficiency, and limited energy consumption; other features - such as the advanced automatic feed system which guarantees uniform distribution of the mix inside the mould cavity – boost finished product quality.

Completing the picture is the fast, reliable press set-up system, a solution designed by Sacmi to manage very fast production cycles and simultaneously allow maximum versatility (all setting and mould changeover tasks can be completed in less than an hour). The automatic thickness and pressure control system ensures maximum process repeatability and therefore lets manufacturers achieve, whatever the manufacturing conditions, the desired product density and size.

Sigma, which has already experienced all the advantages of the PHR series with the PHR 500 supplied in 2009, now faces the challenge of raising output capacity to meet a growing market demand. That demand has, in the special-format refractory sector alone, led the company (based in Locate Varesino, Como, Italy) to double its output capacity to 500 tons per month, thus reinforcing its European leadership in the production of special formats for glass kilns.
