Packaging, EU exports on the up-and-up

First half-year characterised by stability of sales and orders. Internal demand sluggish (-12.6%)

The good progress made by the Italian packaging industry in the second quarter has resulted in a positive bounce-back on the export front. Over the first half of the year exports to the EU increased by a average of +16.7% (France +10.9%, Germany +8.5%, Spain +27%, United Kingdom +18.4%). Particularly noteworthy is the performance of the Polish market, which, with an increase of +45%, is now the Italian producers’ 5th customer within the EU. Ucima (the Italian packaging machine constructors association) also reported an upturn in internal demand within Italy from April to June, thus limiting the damage caused by the poor performance in the first quarter and allowing a half-year closure of –12.6%. “I’m cautiously optimistic and expect to see the year close on a positive note as it did in 2003” commented Giulio Cicognani, vice-president of Ucima and managing director of the Sacmi Group.
According to data released by Ucima, the packaging machine industry has demonstrated good flexibility and a clear ability to bounce back from the difficulties in the dollar zone. Over the first six months of 2004, in fact, sales were stable with respect to the same period in 2003 (which closed at + 2.8%), as were orders. With over five months of production already in the pipeline, results are in line with the previous quarter and better than all of 2003.
