Riedhammer for the Cuban whiteware industry

Ceramica Blanca of San Josè can now produce 550 sanitaryware items a day

This consignment was handled by Riedhammer, German member-company of the Sacmi Group and the world’s leading producer of ceramic and sanitaryware firing plants. The supply includes all the in-line equipment, from body preparation to mould-making technology (body and glaze mills excepted).

This winning partnership, strengthened by years of joint experience in the ceramic field, gave rise to a key order from Cuban company Ceramica Blanca. Located in San Josè – not far from the capital Havana – the company decided to aim for nothing less than complete renewal of its production facilities. The new line, which became operative a few months ago, has been designed to produce over 150,000 sanitaryware articles a year – about 550 every day – using extremely energy-efficient methods throughout the process. About a third of output is accounted for by WCs; together with the two washbasin models, one with pedestal, the plant can meet demand for complete bathrooms.

What makes the San Josè plant so special is the installation of a special 9-car Riedhammer-designed shuttle kiln – diesel-fuelled as there are no other local fuel supplies – with an 18-20 hour firing cycle.

Yet the San Josè plant is not the Sacmi Group’s first contact with Cuba. Twenty years ago, Cuba was the first country in all of Central America and the Caribbean to purchase a complete plant from Sacmi Imola; the plant was installed in the eastern town of Holguin. In this case too, the customer expressed enormous satisfaction with the achieved product quality and productivity.
