SACMI takes part in Imola s ethiopian mission

SACMI has contributed to Imola s mission to Ethiopia both financially and with the direct participation of one of its employees, who describes her experiences here: First of all, I would like to pass on the thanks of the mission which was equipped three years ago by the Cappuccini Friars in Imola and sent to Gassa Chare - a large village in Dewro Konta, Ethiopia. Sacmi feels strongly that it is possible to overcome poverty in this area by providing adequate education and training for the younger generations. To this end, the company made the decision to be the sole financiers of a project to build a kindergarten there by contributing a sum amounting to 50,000,000 Italian Lire. From this, 25,000,000 Lit. were given directly to the head of the mission when 15 volunteers (including myself) departed for Ethiopia last December. A poor country like Ethiopia has many pressing needs: from increasing the possibility to feed itself to stemming the tide of disease which, due to malnutrition and lack of hygiene, is a problem of worrying magnitude. In particular, this year, the drought has aggravated the problem of lack of water making it impossible to apply even the most basic standards of hygiene. Future projects include plans to drill new wells and build an adequately equipped clinic. My 17 days at the mission were an extremely constructive experience. I could see for myself how desperate the situation in this area is - the people do not even have the basic necessities of life - and I realised how for us, in the Western world, even luxuries have become necessities. I was privileged to meet people who have dedicated their life to helping others. My own contribution was small but for these people, who have nothing, even our "small offering" is worth a great deal. Edmund Burke said that there is no greater error than doing nothing just because what can be done is too little. To give one example; today it is possible to "adopt" an Ethiopian child and maintain him/her "well" with a mere 150,000 Lit. per year - the equivalent of six months average wages in Ethiopia.
