Time and place: 22nd – 23rd April, the Swiss Hotel, Düsseldorf. The event: PETnology Europe 2008, a conference now at its eleventh edition that brings together all the world’s major PET technology players just a few days from Interpack, the key international packaging fair. A not-to-be-missed opportunity, then, to blend two business meetings that have a lot in common, especially as regards the PET packaging industry. On the 23rd SACMI will give a talk during the “Caps & Closures: developments and experience” session. The focus of the talk, by Luca Nanetti, Marketing Manager of the SACMI Imola Closures & Containers Business Unit, will be standards and innovative design in closures and bottle necks – developments made possible by continuous technological evolution and SACMI’s constant investment in R&D, especially as regards new machines that take advantage of the benefits of compression technology.
By 2011, beverage market volumes are expected to reach a staggering 450 billion pieces: at present, 61% of closures are made using compression technology, almost half of which comes from SACMI. There are already over 800 CCM machines installed around the world, from the CCM 48S, with an output rate of 1200 pcs/minute, to the CCM 64M, with 1600 pcs/minute and a cycle time of just 2.4 seconds. These cutting-edge machines have allowed SACMI to win big market shares - and the company aims to build on that leadership by way of innovative design for closures and by making the most of developments with regard to bottle necks, for which the markets are demanding greater practicality, security and safety, especially as regards anti-imitation.
Hence the need to draw up new standards in place of the traditional PCO 1881. An example, the revolutionary ML 27, a cap designed to save weight and enhance product properties, especially as regards “inviolability”. Already widespread on the main international markets, this innovative cap is available in three different versions according to closure type and drink type. Additionally, there is the ML 1881 cap, a variation on the theme designed by SACMI that is also compatible with the traditional PCO 1881 but enhances its performance. Finally, Thread Lock, a patented SACMI design specifically intended for mineral water bottling, ensures better properties and, above all, paves the way for a new concept of environmental sustainability. The Thread Lock closure – on the Italian market alone – is worth some 15 billion pieces, which would mean material savings in the order of 3.
