Sacmi Labelling at the International Sleeve Label Conference

Key meeting to take place in Chicago, from 12th to 14th May 2008

Daniele Marastoni, Sacmi Labelling’s R&D manager, will be giving a talk on ‘Roll-Fed Sleeve Technology, ecological sleeve application’, at the International Sleeve Label Conference 2008, to be held at the Hyatt Rosemont Hotel in Chicago (12-14 May). The talk will illustrate the ecological advantages of the new heat-shrink label application technology patented by Sacmi Labelling.

Daniele Marastoni will be presenting Opera RFST Roll-Fed Sleeve Technology, a modular labelling machine that, via a new sealing technique, can apply plastic film heat-shrunk wrap-type labels directly from film reels.

With this new "clean" technology the use of a new plastic material – polyolefin – is being experimented. Polyolefin is a carbon/hydrogen-based synthetic polymer that allows perfect recycling as it has a density of less than 1, is lighter than the PET used to make the container and can therefore easily be separated out by floating. Moreover, it offers maximum heat-shrink performance that is 50% higher at a temperature below 95°C.

Thanks to its numerous advantages, the sleeve procedure is now the world’s fastest-growing container decoration method, expanding at some 15-20% a year.

Using this method doesn’t just enhance product appearance; it also boosts quality because heat-shrunk plastic labels reduce the amount of light the product is exposed to, improving preservation and enhancing the barrier effect of the container and so ensuring compliance with hygiene and safety requisites.

This type of packaging also complies perfectly with eco-compatibility requirements.
