Utility and waste disposal firms gen up on “electronic noses”

Meeting on “Innovative control of the olfactory impact of waste” to be held in Imola on 15th December

Waste disposal without the accompanying bad smells - thanks to utilisation of the latest generation of olfactory sensors, or “electronic noses”. Use of these innovative devices in the environmental and refuse sectors will be the focus of a convention on “Innovative control of the olfactory impact of waste” to be held by the Sacmi Group on Wednesday 15th December at its Assembly Hall in Imola. The meeting, which has aroused much interest on account of its subject matter and its participants, will be attended by representatives of Italian utility companies and public/private firms specialised in the handling and treatment of waste. The convention will illustrate current odour containment standards for compost, rubbish dumps, purification plants and waste disposal in general and will also illustrate the very latest olfactory sensors and systems, a highly innovative area of technology steadily being developed by the Sacmi Food Processing division. So-called “electronic noses”, in fact, play a key role in the advanced control/process systems being jointly developed by the Sacmi research centre and the University of Brescia. “The extension of olfactory sensors to the environmental field“, points out Sacmi Group General Manager Giulio Cicognani, “represents, together with artificial vision and optical selection systems, one of the most advanced applications ever to have been devised by the Group”. The meeting will be attended by the head of the Ministerial Environmental Protection and Technical Services Agency (Apat), Giorgio Cesari, who will illustrate problems and standards concerning odour emissions.
