ARPA Emilia Romagna chooses Sacmi’s “electronic nose”

Experimental project for the “objective” measurement of olfactory pollution gets under way

Even bad smells are a source of pollution. But just how can they be measured objectively? It’s a problem that the Region of Emilia-Romagna has put at the very top of its agenda, one being dealt with by drawing up relevant guidelines and equipping ARPA (the regional environmental control agency) with the very best technology. That technology includes the “electronic nose”, developed jointly by Sacmi and Imola-based firm Bryo, now placed at ARPA’s disposal to conclude an initial experimental project.

This will be the topic of a public meeting at Imola titled “Odour control and measuring techniques. Olfactory pollution: the commitments of industry and institutions”, set to take place this coming 16th May at 5 p.m. in the town art gallery (via Sacchi 4). Introducing the meeting, moderated by director of eco-science, Giancarlo Naldi, will be the technical manager of ARPA Emilia-Romagna, Vito Belladonna. Talks by Luciano Mazzini, Imola’s Environment Councillor, Stefano Manara, Bryo’s managing director, and Fabrizio Demattè, manager of Sacmi’s Inspection Systems, will follow.

This meeting takes place against a backdrop of ever-growing demand for efficient odour monitoring systems that is, in particular, being driven by the increasing number of biomass plants in use. Monitoring techniques have – as the technicians Manara and Demattè will illustrate – evolved considerably over recent years, to the extent that such measurements can now be rendered objective, as happens with other parameters associated with more ‘classic’ forms of pollution.

A further talk will be given by Stefano Forti of ARPA Emilia-Romagna CTR Industrial Emissions. He will illustrate a plan to set up a laboratory dedicated exclusively to odour measurement where the most advanced odour detection technologies developed by the industry of Emilia-Romagna can be tested.
