FQKit and FQGun: NIR technology for everyone

Two new fruit quality control systems were presented by Sacmi at the last edition of Macfrut

FQKit and FQGun, two new fruit quality control systems equipped with Sacmi-developed NIR (Near infra red) technology, were presented for the very first time at Macfrut 2004, the international fruit and vegetable fair recently held in Cesena from 6th to 9th May. FQKit and FQGun have extended the application range of non-destructive NIR-type fruit quality control to cover the entire fruit production chain, from the orchard to the supermarket shelf. The first unit (FQKit) is, in fact, compatible with all existing fruit sorting lines, traditional or otherwise. The second (FQGun) is, instead, a portable user-friendly unit that allows measurement of key quality parameters while the fruit is still on the tree, thus helping growers choose the perfect moment for picking. In addition to this in-the-field application, FQGun (so-called on account of its pistol-like shape) can also be used at subsequent stages of processing, all the way to product delivery. Moreover, special software keeps track of each individual fruit from the orchard to final packaging and allows the creation of valuable fruit quality databases. The NIR system lets producers carry out non-destructive analysis of the organoleptic characteristics (sugar content, ripeness, acidity, diameter, weight plus any brown core or water core etc.) that determine the quality of every single fruit. “The development of FQKit and FQGun show that Sacmi’s NIR systems for the quality control of fruit are constantly evolving”, says Roberto Marcheselli, Managing Director of Inpak. “Hundred of our F5 systems have already been installed all over the world. Now, the versatility of the FQKit and FQGun systems will raise quality standards throughout the fruit and vegetable supply chain even further”.
