“Art drop collection”: the catalogue soon to be released

Ceramic cups interpreted by internationally famed artists using multimedia technology.

This volume, which brings together the experiments and artistic performances that were on show in the exhibition area of Sacmi’s stand at Ceramitec 2003, is the catalogue of the “Art Drop Collection”, due to be released over the coming weeks. It presents an exciting collection of ceramic cups that were designed and made on the Sacmi stand itself by public figures from various artistic fields during the last edition of the German trade fair. Author and editor of this collection is the architect and design historian Laura Villani, who has extensive experience in the organisation and setting-up of international events and exhibitions in museums and galleries and in the planning of supplementary show-performances. Through use of multimedia technology, celebrities attending the Bavarian fair ended up “decorating” the object of this event-cum-exhibition – the humble ceramic cup – when photographs of them taken at the fair were processed, transformed and then reproduced on the cups themselves. The list of internationally renowned artists taking part in the initiative included Andrea Branzi, Roberto Fallani (architecture and design section), Fabrizio Plessi and Marcello Iori (art), Elio Fiorucci and Paola Crema (fashion), Maurizio Galimberti and Claudio Porcarelli (photography) and Tehmina Durrani (literature). “Art Drop Collection” Ceramitec 2003 is the latest in a series of Sacmi-produced catalogues illustrating a series of shows and cultural events aimed at the ceramic industry: "The Teddy Bear Collection" (Ceramitec 2000), “The bathroom: celebrities between rite and design”, “The bathroom: celebrities between experimentation and creativity” (Cersaie 2001 and 2002) and “Bellissimo” (Tecnargilla 2002). Through these initiatives Sacmi aims to promote “cultural exchange” between modern art and industry – two worlds usually far apart, yet both with a keen interest in ceramic, a product as old as art itself and a constant monument to man’s inventiveness.
