Ceramitec, a highly successful Open Day for the Sama research centre

A centre of European excellence dedicated to the quest for new products and production processes in the ceramic tableware, tile and sanitaryware fields: this is Sama F.I.T. (Forschung, Innovation und Training), the Weissenstadt-based facility with a fully operational pilot plant that provides the market with a unique service, allowing customers to develop innovation ahead of their competitors.

So it's hardly surprising that the Open Day, held by the company (fully owned by Sacmi) on Monday 9th April 2018, on the eve of the international Ceramitec fair in Munich, proved to be a huge success; it also coincided with TEAM Day 2018, the annual symposium that, this year, focused on 4.0-oriented advanced ceramic technology.

Over 200 customers took part in the event, rewarding the organisational efforts of the company which, two years ago, celebrated its twentieth anniversary and laid the foundation stone for the new centre. During the visit the participants were able to get a first-hand look at one of the most recent Sama investments, the new diaphragm manufacturing department which has a layout designed to boost manufacturing efficiency and speed up shipment.

Aided by Sama's technical staff, the visitors were also able to experience, inside the Sama F.I.T. research centre, several manufacturing demonstrations and get a close look at various machines: solutions for cup handle manufacture and trimming, pressure casting (crockery and oval plates), dip glazing, isostatic presses complete with finishers and sanding machines. Another key feature of the mini manufacturing line is the shuttle kiln, which reproduces the firing cycle of classic porcelain.

In substance, a complete production line, which is fast becoming a global reference point for research into advanced ceramics. This Open Day success goes hand-in-glove with the good results obtained at the fair. Here, Sama displayed the new PHO 700 press and, above all, presented itself as an indispensable partner for product engineering, for developing plants around individual pieces according to customer requirements and for designing complete production lines - from glazing to kiln - together with the customer. In this sense too then, F.I.T. is synonymous with innovation. It also stands for feasibility verification, process simulation and hands-on machine training, ensuring returns on investment are maximised immediately.
