New company Porcellan makes its first moves

Sacmi-supplied porcelain tile production plant started up in Abu Dhabi

Production has begun at the Porcellan plant, located in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. The latest addition to the Group controlled by Jamal Al Ghurair, this new company aims to provide the local ceramic industry with added value and achieve greater diversification of both output and target. The ultimate goal is to attain success on international markets.

Supplied by Sacmi, the plant became operational on 29th January; its start-up, attended by Mr. Jamal Al Ghurair, Chairman of Jamal Al Ghurair Group, saw the making of the first glazed tiles, part of a range of outstanding quality. The first finished products left the factory just 48 hours after start-up, a source of considerable satisfaction for both Sacmi’s technicians and Porcellan’s managers. Moreover, the excellent quality of the first tiles clearly demonstrates the outstanding synergy that unites the technological-technical teams from Porcellan and Sacmi.

With an output capacity of 54,000 m2 a day, the plant features two Sacmi-made MMC180 mills, currently the largest in the world. Another key part of the order consists of two ATM200 spray driers and an ATM65, set aside for the colours, plus eight high-tonnage presses, eight horizontal driers and five single-level ones. Finally, there are four roller kilns with pre-kilns, two 207.9 metres long and two 218.4 metres long: there are now almost 1 km of high efficiency kilns, which Sacmi has equipped with special energy saving systems.

The technical choices and sheer size of this first order mean that Porcellan can guarantee exceptional economies of scale and so become a leading producer not only at local, but also international level. Designed to produce large porcelain tiles - and, thanks to cutting-edge machines, the very best porcelain tiles, both glazed and technical - the plant has been set up in an area of the capital that will soon see extensive building work, a new industrial district with good land and sea connections that will offer an excellent point of outlet onto foreign and international markets.
