SACMI, new devices for enhanced firing efficiency

Sacmi Forni has perfected innovative new systems for the control of temperature and in-kiln roller damage.

Destined to play an important part in the future of the ceramic industry and improve the efficiency of roller kilns: these latest hyper-technological devices to be developed by the Sacmi Forni R&D department - which go by the names of IRIDE (InfraRed Intelligent Device) and SPINMARK - have been designed to ensure that critical firing zones are controlled with absolute precision and to provide real-time roller damage warnings.
With IRIDE, SACMI technicians have perfected an infrared pyrometric system that consists of an optical pyrometric scanner, which acquires the surface temperature of the transiting pieces, and dedicated software (on the kiln computer) to process the thus-gathered data. The acquired information is used to obtain a reference temperature for zone-relevant control and adjustment devices. The different kiln zones, in fact, are normally “meeting points” for gaseous currents that have different temperatures that depend on settings. Any pauses in production will, of course, have a profound effect on firing procedures and their repeatability. By monitoring the real temperature of transiting products IRIDE thus introduces absolutely reliable data for the variable to be controlled into the adjustment loop.
The patented SPINMARK roller monitoring system is activated immediately when breakage of one or more rollers is likely to cause serious problems on the kiln and interrupt production. The device immediately informs personnel of any roller breakages when special components (installed inside a non-magnetic metal tube located under the free-spinning end of the rollers) detect absence of roller rotation. Impact-resistant and immune to high temperatures, the device detects the passage of small magnets applied to the free-spinning ends of the rollers. In the event of damage the computer immediately displays the kiln module where the fault is located. SPINMARK can be applied along the full length of the kiln or in critical zones only, providing an overview of the situation that can be viewed from both the main control panel and smaller panels located along the kiln.
