Savoia chooses a Sacmi-built two-channel roller kiln

A cutting-edge model that blends productivity, efficiency and energy savings

The Fiorano-based Ceramica Savoia plant recently started up an 84-metre Sacmi RKK two-channel roller kiln. Able to produce about 9,000 m2/day of glazed porcelain tile (depending on size), the RKK features an energy recovery system that withdraws air at 120 °C from the hot air chimney and feeds it back into the burners at 110 °C, thus providing considerable fuel savings and reducing environmental impact.

To ensure better management and more accurate control of slow cooling, Sacmi has equipped this section of the kiln not with the traditional micro blowers but, rather, heat diffuser tubes, which exchange heat with the product indirectly. Kiln performance has also been improved by splitting the hot air intake piping at the cooling stage.

In the configuration chosen by Savoia, the kiln supervision system has two PCs: these carry out process controls and data management separately. The first computer features “Praktico” process software, which oversees kiln control and operation, while the second has “Tutor”, which deals instead with supervision, data management and any connectivity with other IT systems.

Kiln performance has also been enhanced thanks to Spinmark, a device that warns the user of any roller breakage, and special software for the control of production gaps both small and large. When a gap occurs in the rapid cooling zone this software allows the user to disable automatic adjustment and set the degree of motorized valve aperture according to a product-specific firing curve, independently of temperature set-point. This means that any products arriving after a production gap will always undergo optimum processing. Moreover, to enhance gap management even further the rapid cooling zone has been equipped with burners: these reduce the breakages that stem from the cooling cracks that can follow a gaps in output.

To complete the plant a handling system was supplied by SIMA, a company of Sacmi group and a specialised provider of product handling/storage systems with extensive experience in the production of laser-guided vehicles.
