Once again, Santa Margherita puts its faith in Sacmi OPERA labellers

An ancient wine-making tradition dating back to the times of the Roman conquests, when vine growing spread throughout the Eastern Veneto, Conegliano-Valdobbiadene and Alto Adige regions. And cutting-edge technology, the result of a strong partnership with leading packaging solution designers. This, then, is the Santa Margherita Wine Group (Santa Margherita Gruppo Vinicolo) which, with the expansion of its production facility at Villanova di Fossalta di Portogruaro (Ve) and, in parallel, the construction of a new bottling line, has renewed its trust in Sacmi labelling technology.

A producer of leading brands marketed worldwide – from the Santa Margherita a Torresella core brand to the prestigious Kettmeir, and wines of Tuscan and Mediterranean soul such as Lamole di Lamole, Vistarenni, Sassoregale and Terreliade - the Santa Margherita Group is a major Italian winemaking hub that sells over 19 million bottles a year in 85 countries worldwide. Now, after installing the first Sacmi Opera labeller back in 2002 - and further machines in 2009 and 2011 - Santa Margherita has ordered a fourth Sacmi labeller from the same range, a brand new 24-head OPERA 450 with 6 self-adhesive labelling units that can handle up to 12,000 applications per hour on sparkling wines, rising to 18,000 on still wines.

In addition to the labeller’s renowned productivity and efficiency, this renewed trust in Sacmi stems from the OPERA’s outstanding format-handling flexibility. The just-purchased labeller – expected to be delivered and started up by December 2016 – can, in fact, manage up to 15 different formats in parallel and ensures productive continuity by working in a master-slave configuration (i.e. while one unit continues working the other can be stopped to perform reel replacement without having to stop the line).

Key features on this latest solution for Santa Margherita include the advanced LVS system (developed by Sacmi’s Automation&Service Division); this is designed to ensure proper bottle positioning at the labeller infeed, thus ensuring correct application of 100% of labels (body front, body back and wrap-around neck labelling). In accordance with the customer’s wishes, and in keeping with a policy aimed at developing customised and turnkey solutions, Sacmi will also install a laser marker system for the counter-labels that indicate the production batch.

This sale sees Sacmi strengthen its role as a pivotal technological partner and provider of automated, high-performance bottling line control solutions to Italy’s most prestigious wineries. Our goal, in fact, is to become an all-round partner to the wine industry (a key exponent of Made in Italy excellence), which sees packaging and end-of-line solutions as the key to boosting efficiency and competitiveness on both national and international markets.
